The Surprising Downside of Being An Empath?

CATEGORIES:

Bad news for empaths, being too in-tune with your intuition may be bad for the health. A new study found that being too empathetic leads to sleep disorders and adrenal fatigue.

Over-stimulated adrenal glands, as well as stress, kicks the brain into high gear, causing heightened alertness that lasts for hours. Unfortunately, all these affect an empath's sleep, leading stress level cortisol to flood the body and causing insomnia in the evenings and severe fatigue in the mornings.

How Being Too Empathic Can Lead To Adrenal Fatigue, Insomnia, and Exhaustion

It seems these days we tend to hear, or read about Empaths and all the wonderful things they can do, but what about the downside of these gifts. Are there any consequences for being so in tune with your intuition, or being so psychically connected to others energies and emotions?

Empaths can suffer from a number of symptoms caused by their significant connections they have to the energetic realms and their emotional responsibilities. Among these symptoms is the sudden onset of chronic fatigue, drawn out by energy leakage from not remaining present in awareness, not being conscious of their thoughts, balance and having a failure in staying grounded.

These wonderful beings need consistent time alone in order to reflect upon their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. This individualistic approach to life is not a selfish thing, nor is it a form of introversion, think of it more like a rechargeable battery being plugged in to fill up on voltage. Just like the battery you can connect to multiple electronics and tools, we too are connected to others and pieces of our environment. What happens if you connect your power source to too many technologies without a recharge? Well, most would say it would die but the truth is if it did, you would not be able to refill its energetic core. What happens is it reaches a level of discontinued power output until we can plug it in again, empaths are no different in this manner. We plug our energies and emotions into everyone around us, and if we connect too many times, we drain and fast.

Without proper care of our internal battery, without time or space to ourselves to recharge, Empaths run the risk of becoming to overactive in thought, destroying any peaceful, relaxing, and under stimulated moments in which they can naturally fall asleep and enjoy the restorative effects of sleep. If slumber does occur quickly after hitting the pillow with one’s head then they may end up waking up often throughout the night or tossing and turning through an unrestful sleep. Either or, I feel that they both lend fault to faltering and dropping energy levels throughout our day.

When we are in a constant state of thought, being bombarded by a perceived artillery strike of stimuli, it starts to affect us on a physiological level. This plays havoc on our endocrine system, or rather our adrenal glands. In stressful or high anxiety situations the adrenal gland releases hormones to enact a state of alertness, focus, and increased levels of stamina and awareness. How is this prevalent to Empaths? Well, as mentioned before, if we don’t recharge daily from the constant attack of thoughts, emotions, and energies from others, as we hold onto these thoughts and feelings it becomes increasingly difficult to stave off the ignition of a hormone-induced physiological response.
