Millions of Americans suffer from anxiety and though there are drugs available to treat this condition, there is no guarantee that the drugs are safe. In fact, studies show that long-term use of anti-anxiety medications could worsen mental problems.
In addition, taking medications damage major organs like the liver and kidneys. Turning to all-natural remedies may be the better option. A new study found that St. John’s wort, a medicinal herb, may be effective at treating depression and anxiety. And the herb helps calm frayed nerves without side effects.
Long-term use of benzodiazepines leads to increasing physical and mental health problems. Benzodiazepines have sedative and hypnotic properties.
A 2009 study that found long-term use of benzodiazepines was significantly associated with an increased risk of dementia, leading researchers to recommend “long-term use of BZDs should be avoided among the elderly, who may be at a higher risk for developing dementia, in addition to other health problems.”
Among a group of adults over sixty-five years old, those that used benzodiazepines were fiftypercent more likely to develop dementia over a fifteen year period. Over time, these drugs can accumulate in your body, which will increase your risk of an accidental overdose.
